To many, the bike is the symbol for Santropol Roulant. The bicycle is seen as the healthy and efficient vehicle for delivering meals in downtown Montreal and fits well with the Roulant’s philosophy of environmental consciousness. Volunteers use Santropol Roulant’s fleet of bikes to deliver meals most days, even in winter, and its Bicycle Workshop helps volunteers and neighbors keep their bikes on the road. The Santropol Roulant bicycle, together with its bright red delivery bag, is often spotted rolling around the streets of Montreal during meal delivery time.
This bike design was originally created by Zoe Miller, one of the Roulant’s volunteers, in 1997. Since the exciting beginnings of Santropol Roulant in the era of “The Ice Storm”, there are new generations of volunteers, staff, client members and new and exciting ventures on the go, like an organic roof top garden. The bike design represents and honors the one thing that remains unchanged from that time, the unwavering support from the 120 or so volunteers that breath life through the organization each week.
